Shaping the Future of Individual Development Accounts
In April, Congress agreed to an “Omnibus” spending bill that will fund the government through September of this year but zeroed out funding for Assets for Independence (AFI), the federal program that fueled Individual Development Accounts (IDAs).
For nearly 20 years, AFI has been a central element of the asset-building landscape. While this is a disheartening loss of opportunity, there is still hope. We’ve heard from many of you in the field who are energized and eager to advocate on behalf of AFI and work toward a better, more sustainable future for IDAs.
What can programs do to support IDAs? How can advocates help build a brighter future for adult matched savings?
On Wednesday, May 24 from 2-3:30 pm EDT, Prosperity Now held a field-wide webinar to discuss opportunities for federal, state and other funding for IDAs, actions the field has taken to restore funding to AFI and updates about our new Adult Matched Savings Network. This webinar featured several Prosperity Now experts, including:
- Leigh Tivol, Vice President, Strategy & Engagement
- Joanna Ain, Senior Policy Manager, Federal Policy
- Holden Weisman, State & Local Policy Manager
